Say "No" to Soap, Say "Yes" to Celery & Seeds

So based on the title, I definitely sound like a hippie; not that there's anything wrong with that! I fully embrace my more natural lifestyle. You do what you have to do to survive.

NO SOAP?? WHAT?!

So, I realize these three topics might sound a little random, but they're all related to my crazy hormones. Having children is great. I love it! I don't ALWAYS love it, but in the end, I wouldn't change it. The thing that sucks about having kids is the aftermath and what they can do to our bodies. I breastfed both kids, and when I stopped breastfeeding my first at a year, my skin broke out horribly. It wasn't so bad on my face, but for the first time in my life I had it on my upper back and shoulders. Talk about embarrassing! I eventually got rid of it the first time by using the Norwex body cloths. (Don't worry this isn't an ad for Norwex and I don't sell it. I'm just a fan.) It worked pretty easily, I still used body wash sometimes and eventually went back to using body wash again full time.

My skin after having my son is another story! My skin started getting back before I stopped breastfeeding and this time it got bad on my face too. I was trying EVERYTHING to combat it. Everything I tried would partially work for a couple weeks and then my skin would get horrible again. I've been dealing with this for probably about a year and half! I figured out that it's hormonal because I start to break out more about halfway through my cycle and then it gets worse leading up to my period. The first two weeks of my cycle is always the healing phase. Talk about frustrating!!

A few months ago I decided to try the Norwex cloths again, but this time I was going all in. I stopped using all soap on my face and body and only use the Norwex body cloths on my skin now. I do still use shampoo and hand soap, but that's it. I stopped wearing face lotion and putting anything on my skin except for sunscreen and the occasional makeup, which even then I try to stick to mostly just eye makeup. I am now going on probably three months of only using the cloths to wash my face and body and am really starting to notice a difference.

You might be thinking, "That's great Lauren, but I don't break out so why am I reading this?". Well, my friend, I have noticed other improvements as well! I've been using natural deodorant for over a year, but often would notice I still sweat a lot and stink! It was gross, and I couldn't understand why my pits would still smell bad since that was the ONE job of natural deodorant (and I tried many)...and as a side note, the deodorant would break me out too (under my arms). Since I've been using the Norwex cloths, I barely sweat and my underarms don't smell anymore. It's so great that I barely even have to use deodorant. I still do, but not nearly as much as I used to because I just don't need to anymore.

Ladies, sometimes less really is more. Sometimes even all those natural products and oils out there can be causing us issues and we just need to step back from it all and let our bodies heal naturally. At least I feel like that's what my body is trying to do. If you'd like to learn more about Norwex or know where you can purchase the cloths, I can definitely direct you to someone who sells it, just comment or send me an email.

CELERY JUICE!

I first learned about the power of pure celery juice when I was dealing with a diagnosis of EBV and Adrenal Fatigue a year ago. I fully believe that it was the celery juice that got me out of bed and feeling better again. It gave me my energy and mental clarity back. I learned about celery juice in the book, Medical Medium by Anthony Williams. This book covers so many diseases and conditions from adrenal fatigue, to autoimmune disorders, to diabetes, to autism. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It's very insightful and, in my opinion, makes a lot of sense when it comes to the foods we are putting into our bodies.

I recently, the last three days, started drinking celery juice again. I stopped for a long time because I hated cleaning the juicer and dealing with all the parts. We just bought a Ninja Blender/Nutri Ninja and it has changed my life! My husband and I have gotten into drinking matcha smoothies pretty much every morning. Our old blender just couldn't keep up with our daily habit anymore and started leaking a ton so we went with a Ninja. Not only does it easily handle our daily smoothies, but I now blend up a bunch of celery first thing every morning, strain the pulp into a cup and drink my juice. It's lovely and I feel so great! The Ninja is way easier to clean up. I promise this blog post isn't just one large advertisement. I'm very passionate about products and books that change my life though. I'll include links at the end to everything if you're interested in checking things out.

Back to the celery juice... Here are some of the benefits, pulled directed from the Medical Medium's blog:

  • Anti-Inflammatory
  • Balances your PH
  • Stabilizes blood pressure
  • Detoxifying
  • Antiseptic
  • Heals the gut
  • Supports and stabilizes the adrenals
  • Repairs the liver
  • Reduces depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, and other mental health disorders
  • Antibacterial
  • Cleanses the thyroid
  • And More...

As you can see, celery juice does amazing things and I've experienced many of these effects. It's best if drank first thing in the morning as the first thing that hits your stomach, and then to wait fifteen or more minutes before eating breakfast. To learn more, I definitely recommend the book. Let me know in the comments if you start drinking celery juice or if you've tried it before.

Disclaimer: It tastes horrible at first, but you'll get used to it, I promise! I love the taste now!

SEED CYCLING

I'm very new to seed cycling and it's still way too early to notice any positive effects from it, but it's something I've become increasingly fascinated with. The reason I'm trying it out is primarily for my acne and postpartum depression/anxiety issues that have snuck into my life again. I'm done having kids, have had my tubes removed to prevent any sort of pregnancy, and fortunately I have had a pretty regular 28ish day cycle since it came back after my second (around 9 months PP due to breastfeeding). Maybe too much info, but some people seed cycle to regulate their cycle for regularity or to get pregnant, so I thought that'd be relevant info.

The basic idea, which I got from hormonesbalance.com is that seed cycling boosts estrogen levels in the first two weeks of your cycle and then boosts progesterone in the last 2 weeks. That website goes into the details behind phytoestrogens and conditions it can help and all that fun stuff, so definitely check it out for more info.

To seed cycle you start off by ingesting a tablespoon each of flax and pumpkin seeds (ground up) from the first day of your period until ovulation (Days 1-14). Days 15-28 you ingest a tablespoon each of sunflower and sesame seeds. Naturopath Amy Neuzil writes that if you have irregular periods then you can try to sync your cycle with the moon by beginning the seed cycling with the new moon. I know, now we're really getting into the woo-woo stuff, but I'm telling you, this stuff, as crazy as some of it might sound, tends you actually work!

So here is what a typical morning for me looks like:

I wake up, brush my teeth and then make celery juice.

While I'm drinking my juice, I prepare smoothies for my husband and I and sometimes the kids. I prepare my smoothie first by measuring out a tablespoon each of the seeds I need to ingest that morning and I grind them in my Nutri Ninja, before adding in the rest of my smoothie ingredients. From what I read it is best to buy all the seeds whole and then grind them fresh every day. Sounds tedious, but worth it if it helps you, right?

And if your curious what goes in my smoothies each morning, well here it is:

This is what I typically put in them but the ingredients sometimes get switched up a little depending on how I'm feeling.

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1.5 frozen bananas
  • 1 tsp matcha powder
  • 0.5 - 1 serving hemp protein powder (I still need to research if it's ok to mix hemp seeds with the other seeds, so I'm not doing the powder this week)
  • 1 drop Young Living peppermint vitality essential oil

Depending on the morning I might add one or more of the following:

  • 1 spoonful peanut or almond butter
  • 1 Tbsp raw cacao powder
  • 1 avocado
  • 1 Tbsp hemp seeds

So there you have it! Clearing up acne, hormone balancing, detoxing, and relieving smelly arm pits all in one blog post! You're Welcome!

Please please remember to check with you physician if you have any concerns about seed cycling or celery juice, especially if you have any medical conditions that may be affected by adding either to your diet.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me or leave a comment.
